How to Research Home Care Providers

Help to understand your fees and costs

Once you have been assessed as eligible to receive a Home Care Package, but waiting to be assigned your home care package, you should start researching potential Approved Aged Care Providers and understand the fees and costs of your care and what you may need to contribute.

Here’s a checklist to guide you through the process of researching Home Care Providers:

  1. After your assessment

Check your Home Care Package level and approval date.

  1. Create a shortlist of Home Care Providers in your local area

Just as you would research any other type of provider, carefully consider which Home Care Providers could provide your care and whether they have a sound reputation for home care in your area. They should be able to offer you a full range of services to meet your current and future needs.

Research and consider:

  • The type of organisation you would like to deliver your care - their values, approach to care, are they flexible, easy to contact and talk with?
  • What is their background and how long have they been providing care?
  • Can they offer all the care service you need?
    • Home care, nursing and allied heath
  • Are they an approved provider and quality accredited?
  • Are they connected to your community?
    • Are they real and not ‘fly by night’?
  • Do they directly employ their own case manager and care workers?

You can use the Service Finder on the My Aged Care web site or contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 for their advice.

  1. Work out the fees

Understand your basic daily care fee and income-tested care fee.

Although Home Care Packages are subsidised by the Australian Government, depending on your financial capacity, you may be required to contribute towards the cost of your care. Your financial capacity will be assessed by Centrelink who may request that you contribute in one of the following ways:

  • A basic fee of up to 17.5% of the single basic Age Pension.
  • An income-tested care fee, if your income is over a certain amount.

My Aged Care can give you an estimate of your likely fees with the Fee Estimator on the website at;  or call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.

  • Before you can commence receiving a home care package, it is recommended that you arrange for a formal income assessment to be completed by the Department of Human Services (DHS). Call 1800 227 475.
  1. Contact short-listed Home Care Providers and discuss what they can offer and their fees.

  • Where is the Home Care Provider located - do they service your area?
  • Do they cater for any special care requirements?
    • Languages, cultural, diversity, dementia
  • Will you have a dedicated case manager and the same care worker(s)?
    • Are they easy to contact and flexible with roster changes?
  • How much will the care and services cost?
    • Do they have entry, re-assessment and exit fees?
  • Do they offer after-hours support and care?
    • Can you purchase top-up care (private care)?

Deciding on using a Home Care Service Provider is an important decision. It is a trusted relationship and one which should not be taken lightly. There needs to be mutual respect and trust between the client (and the client’s family) and the carer.
