10 Questions you should ask a Home Care Provider…

Trying to choose the right Home Care provider for you or a loved one can be overwhelming. It can also be difficult to tell the difference between providers and the care that they provide.

What questions should you ask before engaging a Home Care service provider?

  • What are your values?

  • Do you employ your own staff or do you employ contract Care Workers? 

Directly employing Care Workers can result in greater consistency of training and continuity of your care at home. That’s why we directly employ, train and supervise our own team of experienced and culturally diverse Nurses, Physiotherapists, Dementia Specialists and Care Workers.

Oxley Home Care’s team of professional staff undergo a rigorous screening and training program to ensure they are qualified to care for you to the high standard we find acceptable. We take the time to get to know you, so you can be matched with Care Workers perfectly suited to meet your needs.

Our Service Delivery Manager oversees all of our Care Workers. And, our Care Managers work closely with doctors, hospital discharge planners, social workers and local community groups to ensure all care is tailored to meet your individual needs.

  • Do you come and visit me before commencing my Home Care services? 

Look for a service provider that includes a home consultation as part of its aged care services. Oxley Home Care always conducts a home consultation prior to starting Home Care Services so that we can ascertain how we can meet your specific needs and goals and develop a care plan that’s guided by you, incorporating your cultural heritage and traditions.

We will assign you a Care Manager who will be responsible for all of your service co-ordination, case management and ongoing reassessment.

  • Will you involve me and my loved ones or family in any decisions about my Care? 

We seek to involve you and your loved ones in determining the tailored care that will meet your personal needs. In fact, all aged care providers have a responsibility to involve you and your loved ones in deciding the care that will meet your needs.

The consumer directed approach for Home Care Packages allows you to be involved  and have control over the design and delivery of your Home Care Package services provided to you. The expected outcome for you is a better quality of life with increased independence, re-enablement and empowerment.

At Oxley Home Care, we ensure your Home Care is delivered exactly how you want it – you determine your care, how it’s delivered and who delivers it.

  • Are your Care Workers local to my area? 

It makes sense to have a Home Care Worker who lives in your local community to avoid delaying factors, such as traffic. We endeavour for your Care Worker to live locally to you. Also, having a local resident means they will be familiar with the geography and will be knowledgeable on local community services and amenities.

  • What level of care am I likely to need? 

Did you know? Domestic and social care can include meal preparation, light housekeeping and assistance with daily activities such as reading, and entertainment.

Personal Care includes the basic activities of daily living – eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, and continence. This level of care requires a higher level of training than domestic and social care.

Nursing Care is provided by a licensed skilled professional such as a Nurse, licensed Practical Nurse, Physiotherapist, or Occupational Therapist.

Your general health needs to be as good as it can be, so that you have do all that you want. Your Oxley Home Care Manager can organise physiotherapy, podiatry or another health care professional to assess and assist you.

  • Will my Care Worker have a valid drivers license and a car?

Driving to appointments or to the local shopping centre may be required, so it will be crucial that your Home Care Worker will hold a valid driving license, as all Oxley Home Care Workers do. They will also need access to a reliable and well-maintained car.

  • Can my Care Worker speak my language? 

If English is a second language, perhaps you might feel more comfortable with a Home Care Worker who speaks your native language? At Oxley Home Care, we ensure that our Care Workers understand and meet your cultural and linguistic needs.

Oxley Home Care workers are culturally diverse (speaking 28 languages), hold Certificated III Aged Care qualifications and are experienced in supporting clients with dementia, catheters and stomas.

  • Do you offer After-Hours support? 

You will want to have an understanding of the availability of your Home Care Worker outside of regular business hours, and how easily they can be contacted. An-after hours call service is very useful.

Oxley Home Care offers a 24 hour, 7 day per week service, including after-hours and weekend support.

  • It’s a relationship. How will you make it work for me? 

Deciding on using a Home Care service provider is an important decision. It is a trusted relationship and one which should not be taken lightly. There needs to be mutual respect and trust between you, your family and the Care Worker. We understand this implicitly.
