The decision has been made. Your elderly loved one needs some assistance from a professional aged care provider. Where do you start? What do you need to look for in an aged care provider?
Rita Merienne, founder of Aged Care Consultancy, Aged Care with Ease (ACE) has these tips for finding the right aged care provider for your loved one.
Have they been doing this for a while or are they new to the business? Do they have the infrastructure to be able to provide the services you need?
Ask for other clients’ opinions. Talk to people and get their views on their aged care.
Questions for the service provider
Ask them what they would do in certain situations i.e. what happens if mum is uncomfortable with personal care?
Know what service your aged loved one needs
I know this sounds very obvious, however you would be surprised. Sometimes your aged loved one doesn’t tell you everything. Whether it is because they forget or they don’t want you to know how much they need assistance in the home. Talking to a doctor with your loved one and finding out what their health needs are is important. This includes regular discussions with the aged care provider to understand what their day-to-day needs are.
The right fit
Finding the right aged care provider that understands the emotional aspects of aged care is very important – it is tough for everyone and the last thing you need is a provider that doesn’t understand and respect a family’s and client’s needs.

Are they professional?
Friendly and engaging staff that can handle some difficult and stressful situations – you only want the best for your aged loved one. Providing care can be one of the most stressful situations and you need somebody that can always be respectful to your aged loved ones. After all it is a position of trust – trust in care and trust in the home.
Open and honest communication between everyone
You need to have regular and open communication with your aged care provider. Have one sibling as the contact with the provider and make sure there is regular contact and that the messages are being conveyed to everyone – provider, siblings and aged loved one. Please include your aged loved one in everything – let them know what is going on and who will be doing it. Trust me, it will help in the long run.
