Having a conversation about aged care is important…

For most of us, the first few months of the New Year is a time to rest, refresh and plan for the rest of the year. It’s also a great time to speak to elderly parents about aged care solutions having spent the holiday period together.

Many families recognise the need to seek out assistance for their loved ones, as the extended exposure with family members often highlights the need for home care or other services.

Council on the Ageing Chairman, Ian Yates told The Age, that he expects there to be the usual spike in inquiries to various aged care service providers, assessors and the government’s My Aged Care website during the early months of the year.

Families have come together for the first time in a while and recognise changes in their parent’s health and/or ability to look after themselves.
“It worries us, because sometimes it is a genuine recognition (of their parents needing assistance) and … sometimes it is fly-in kids who start organising their parents’ lives,” Yates says.

“Most people would prefer to get help at home. They need to know there is an increased range of opportunity for help at home and that it doesn’t have to mean losing control,” he says.
Many elderly people will be afraid of losing independence and control over their own lives, so it’s vital to help maintain their dignity.

Accessing home care services – whether it is just getting some help with shopping, dressing, domestic assistance or higher levels of nursing care – can be a wonderful option for families.

To be eligible for government subsidised home care packages or residential aged care, an individual needs to first be assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Team via the my aged care website.

Once approved, the government pays a large part of the care costs and individuals make a contribution depending on their income in the case of home care.
