What do I need, to find a career in Aged Care?

Aged care is shaping up to be a boom industry in Australia’s economy as our population ages and the demand for care services continues to grow. In fact, a career in aged care will be a long one as the needs of our ageing population threaten to outsize the number of trained workers in the industry.

For job seekers wishing to make a career in the aged care industry, it is an opportune time. It’s estimated that by 2044, there will be 1.2 million more people aged over 85 than there are today, and the average older Australian will live five years longer than today. And, according to McCrindle Research, Australia will see an unprecedented rate of growth of the over 85’s in our nation over the next 30 years.

Human Resources Co-ordinator at Oxley Home Care, Lahaina Daudt, speaks to hundreds of candidates each year and says the main traits they are looking for are passion and a genuine interest in aged care.

“We are looking for someone who wants to work in the industry and wants to make a difference in peoples’ lives,” she says.

“We want people who seek to be in a truly rewarding role, not just because the hours are flexible or because they can work close to home.”

Lahaina says aged care workers need to have the following traits:

• Caring personality
• Customer service focused
• Honesty, integrity and reliability
• Professional presentation
• Hard working
• Flexible with change
• Ability to follow policies and procedures
• Ability to follow directions

Having a driver’s license and car with comprehensive insurance and a current police check are essential criteria for a role in aged care.

“There are also some desirable skills and training that candidates should have, or willing to obtain and they include a Certificate III or IV in Aged Care, Community Care, Disability, Nursing or other allied courses,” she says.

“Candidates also need to have proficient written and verbal English skills as well as knowing how to operate a smart phone and a computer.”
